Temple University Integrates Invisalign® Into Dental School Curriculum

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov 28, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX News Network/ -- Align Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALGN), the inventor of Invisalign(R), a proprietary method of straightening teeth without wires or brackets, today announced that Temple University School of Dentistry has integrated the Invisalign System into its dental curriculum.

This spring, third and fourth year dental students completed an Invisalign certification course at Temple University School of Dentistry (TUSD). Students are now able to treat full cases under the direction of certified orthodontic residents and faculty members. Study of Invisalign treatment techniques and protocols will be part of required coursework for third year dental students. The next certification course for TUSD students is scheduled for the spring semester in 2006.

"Temple has a reputation for being an excellent clinically oriented school of dentistry because its students are exposed to many different clinical experiences. The inclusion of Invisalign in our curriculum is in line with the educational mission of the dental school," said Dr. Orhan Tuncay, Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthodontics at TUSD. "The resulting education and exposure is of great value to the students."

The School of Dentistry was founded in 1863, and became affiliated with Temple University in 1907. It is the second-oldest dental school in continuous operation in the United States. One hundred twenty-five students are enrolled in the freshman class each year. The School has fully accredited graduate programs for the following specialties: orthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, and advanced education in general dentistry. Temple University School of Dentistry also enjoys affiliations with several hospitals in the Greater Philadelphia area.

"Integrating Invisalign into dental and orthodontic curricula is one of the most important components of our clinical education program," said Dr. Lou Shuman, Vice President of Strategic Clinical Relations at Align. "Under the direction of Dr. Tuncay, TUSD has created an incredible culture that stresses the study of new technologies for improved clinical treatment. We are pleased they have recognized the value of Invisalign treatment as part of their curriculum."
