Harvard University Integrates Invisalign® into Dental School Curriculum

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct 10, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Align Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALGN), the inventor of Invisalign(R), a proprietary method of straightening teeth without wires or brackets, today announced the Harvard School of Dental Medicine is integrating Invisalign into its required coursework in dentistry.

"We are very excited about the integration of the Invisalign technique into the curriculum at Harvard," said Dr. Lou Shuman, Align's Vice President of Strategic Clinical Relations. "Harvard's research-focused program melds well with our dedication to education through breakthrough research and the introduction of new technologies."

In April, third year students completed an Invisalign certification course at Harvard School of Dental Medicine (HSDM). Students will now be able to treat anterior tooth movement cases under the supervision of certified orthodontic residents and faculty members. The next certification course is scheduled for April 2006.

"Our mission is to train leaders in our field. In order to accomplish this, we need to make sure that our students are conversant with the latest techniques and technology, both for optimal patient care and for avenues for investigation," said Dr. Leslie Will, associate professor and associate chair of the Department of Developmental Biology. "With Invisalign, they have one more tool in their armamentarium, and are better prepared to treat patients."

The first university-based dental school in the country, Harvard School of Dental Medicine was founded in 1867 and was the first institution of its kind to be closely associated with a university and its medical school. A unique feature of the curriculum places dental students in joint classes with medical students for their first two years of basic science and introduces students to clinical medicine at Harvard teaching hospitals and community health centers.

Today, HSDM is the smallest school at Harvard University. With a total student body of 280, including pre-doctoral and post-doctoral students spread over several disciplines, HSDM is an intimate community of students and faculty.

About Align Technology, Inc.

Align Technology designs, manufactures and markets Invisalign, a proprietary method for treating malocclusion, or the misalignment of teeth. Invisalign corrects malocclusion using a series of clear, nearly invisible, removable appliances that gently move teeth to a desired final position. Because it does not rely on the use of metal or ceramic brackets and wires, Invisalign significantly reduces the aesthetic and other limitations associated with braces. Invisalign is appropriate for treating adults and older teens. Align Technology was founded in March 1997 and received FDA clearance to market Invisalign in 1998.
