Align Technology Surpasses One Million Patient Milestone for Invisalign(TM) Clear Aligners

SANTA CLARA, CA, Apr 30, 2009 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX News Network) -- News Facts

-- Santa Clara, Calif.-based Align Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: ALGN) today announced a significant business milestone, the shipping of its one millionth Invisalign(TM) case.

-- Wilmette, Ill., orthodontist Dr. James Kohl is treating the millionth patient, 15-year-old high school freshman Julia Helms, with the new Invisalign Teen(TM) product.

-- Developed with leading orthodontists who understand the active lifestyles and unique treatment needs of teens, the new Invisalign Teen product combines the benefits of the proven Invisalign Full system with new features like blue Compliance Indicators that are designed to gradually fade as the aligner is worn, Eruption Tabs that accommodate the growth of secondary molars, and other features that address clinical needs common to teen patients.

-- With the introduction of the FDA-cleared Invisalign system in 1999, Align pioneered the clear aligner orthodontics market, giving patients a new choice over traditional wire and bracket metal braces.

-- Using advanced technology, including proprietary 3D imaging software, Align introduced one of the most significant innovations in orthodontics in nearly 20 years.

"This is a significant business milestone for us as it demonstrates continued, strong demand for Invisalign, which has evolved into a mainstream treatment option," said Thomas M. Prescott, president and CEO of Align Technology. "With more than a million Invisalign patients and counting, we're continuing to grow the market for clear aligner therapy and expand the Invisalign product family to serve a wide array of consumer needs."

"It's an honor to share this milestone with Align by treating the millionth patient," said Wilmette, Ill.-based orthodontist Dr. James Kohl. "Having prescribed Invisalign to many of my adult and teen patients over the years -- from very complex to simple cases -- I'm a huge believer in this product. It represents the future of orthodontics because it eliminates so many barriers to treatment, giving me an effective tool to delivering a beautiful smile to anyone -- from adults that would never consider metal braces to active teens that don't want braces interrupting their busy lives."

"I wanted Invisalign Teen because it's almost invisible and barely anyone can tell that I'm straightening my teeth," said 15-year old high-school freshman Julia Helms. "I think it's cool that I don't have to make a bunch of changes to my life or feel self conscious about wearing braces. I can take them out to eat and brush, they don't get in the way of my horseback riding and I'm comfortable smiling for pictures."

"Having lived through the discomfort of metal braces myself -- with the wires and rubber bands -- I didn't want Julia to have to go through all of that," said Laura Helms, Julia's mom. "Given the fact that we can monitor whether she's wearing them as prescribed and Invisalign Teen costs about the same as braces, we wanted her to have the best so she could be comfortable during her high school years."

About Align Technology, Inc.

Align Technology designs, manufactures and markets Invisalign, a proprietary method for treating malocclusion, or the misalignment of teeth. Invisalign corrects malocclusion using a series of clear, nearly invisible, removable appliances that gently move teeth to a desired final position. Because it does not rely on the use of metal or ceramic brackets and wires, Invisalign significantly reduces the aesthetic and other limitations associated with braces. Invisalign is appropriate for treating adults and teens. Align Technology was founded in March 1997 and received FDA clearance to market Invisalign in 1998. Today, the Invisalign product family includes Invisalign, Invisalign Teen, Invisalign Assist, Invisalign Express, and Vivera Retainers.
