University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Integrates Invisalign® Into Dental School Curriculum

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept 29, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Align Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: ALGN), the inventor of Invisalign(R), a proprietary method of straightening teeth without wires or brackets, today announced that the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) Dental School has integrated Invisalign techniques and treatment into their undergraduate dental curriculum.

"We are pleased that UTHSCSA has recognized the value of the Invisalign system as part of their curriculum," said Dr. Lou Shuman, Vice President of Strategic Clinical Relations at Align. "They have an outstanding reputation as a sophisticated orthodontic program, and this integration further demonstrates their appreciation of advancing technology in this field."

As part of the integration, Invisalign Certification I will be offered as an elective to all third year dental students. Seventy percent of the Class of 2007 have participated in the training course and can now treat anterior tooth movement under the direction of certified orthodontic residents and faculty members. In the fall of 2005, 60 students are scheduled to participate in the certification course.

"The Invisalign technique is now being incorporated into the intensive diagnostic and treatment planning training offered at UTHSCSA, which is in keeping with the dental school's core competency and outcome objectives in orthodontics," said Dr. Clarence C. Bryk, Director of Undergraduate Orthodontic Education at the UTHSCSA Dental School. "Integrating the Invisalign system into our curriculum benefits the students by providing them with a therapeutic mechanism which can selectively be used in the treatment of orthodontic problems."

The Dental School at UTHSCSA, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this year, is committed to the enhancement of oral health through education, research, and patient care, and offers a curriculum that is based on contemporary and relevant technology, science and practice. Each year, approximately 90 students are admitted to the program.
